Peter de Francia

Peter de Francia is best known for his monumental social realist canvases of the 1950s – yet his oeuvre extends far beyond these. His focus on migrants and marginalised communities feels more of our contemporary moment than his own, as does his promiscuous movement between high art and low art, between the heroic and the mock heroic, the satirical and the earnest. This website, realised in collaboration with his estate, reflects both the range and the coherence of his vision. It does so with around 150 works, organised in thematic sections each featuring an introductory texts by me, as well as a longer biography and links to texts published by major critics.
